Review: RefreshDC, Data Visualization Strategies and Open Source Tools

I attended the latest Refresh DC event this past Thursday, April 21st 2011, to hear about data visualization strategies.  It was an interesting 45 minute presentation by Dave Leonard, a Solutions Architect from Phase2 Technology.  Dave covered some general concepts like qualitative vs quantitative data, visualizing data values using display properties, cutting down visual noise, and demonstrative vs investigative presentations.  A few tools he intro’ed primarily centered around Mapbox, for custom map tiles, and several jQuery plugins.
